Overview
Yuasa are one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of lead–acid batteries with global manufacturing plants and an extensive marketing and distribution network throughout the UK and Europe. Its plant at Ebbw Vale employs over 300 people.
What We Did
A key element to the success at Yuasa was that the energy management process was driven from the top. Plant director, Richard Davies attended the weekly meetings and was inspired by our early success. Our most dramatic achievement was the reduction in weekend electricity consumption. This simple reduction, illustrated in the graph below, was responsible for a big part of the £364,000 of savings we made in the first year.
We implemented changes to the compressor and extraction systems. A site switch-off procedure was also implemented.
The Carbon Trust appointed an independent consultant to verify that we had achieved a reduction, £364,000 in the first year.
Yuasa’s efforts were rewarded in 2006 when they won the Wales Business and Sustainability Awards for a company with more than 50 employees.

‘RUMM has yielded a substantial saving to our energy bill. We have found their approach both professional and well–informed with any requests being followed up by a timely response. RUMM helped us to visualise any saving as effects could be observed almost immediately.’
